Simply Sorority

By Lexx Fusco @SimplyEvryThing

Spring and Summer 2015 are going to be huge for Redneck Couture and unveiling of new products. We have been kicking around the idea of custom Sorority Boot Bling. A sorority is a group of sisters that you choose. Much like the country music scene, sorority life is misunderstood: all party, pretty and play. However, both of these scenes in fact have an incredible sense of community, awareness, charity and fun. We wanted to do some research first, and what better way than to talk to a sorority?

(sororitysugar.tumblr.com)

I scored an interview with a lovely member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority of the University of Delaware. She was enthusiastic to answer all of my questions and an absolute joy to talk to. When first considering to write this article, I was skeptical but knew that I had to push my opinions aside in order to get the questions answered. I was pleasantly surprised and this individual was incredibly enlightening:

What inspired you to join a sorority?

"Honestly I wasn't sure about joining a sorority in the first place. At UD, you have to sign up to participate in rush over winter session and at one point I had decided not to do it. My mom was in a sorority though and she kind of persuaded me to just try it out so I signed up. Once I started going through rush, I realized how great of an institution it seemed like and I really wanted to be a part of it. I got more and more excited as rush went on as I bonded with these girls."

How did you select your sorority?

"I'm not sure how other schools work, but at UD the selection process is very formal and its less of me choosing which sorority I want and more of that sorority choosing me. After each round I write down my rank of each sorority I saw and they do the same of the girls. After 5 rounds you get a bid from the sorority that continually wanted you. It's a bit more in depth than that, but the biggest take away is that the sorority chooses you."

What are some myths/stereotypes that you wanna bust about being in a sorority?

"The biggest myth I want to bust is that sorority girls are "b*tches". I hear it all the time, from strangers and friends. A few weeks after I joined a sorority my best friend made the comment that "all sorority girls are b*tches". It hurt my feelings a lot but its also just plain not true. The girls I have met through greek life are some of the sweetest girls I know. We are all there to support each other and we honestly want everyone to succeed. Even girls who are not in my chapter (i.e. are in another sorority) are sweet and friendly. I am constantly interacting and meeting new greek girls and I've never felt like someone was being b*tchy or fake to me."

What's a Big and a Little?

"So when your in a sorority, everyone is your "sister" Your big is literally like your big sister. Its someone who you have formed a really great bond with. If you have questions, thats who you go to. Traditionally, its someone who you constantly are with, your best friend, your other have, etc. My experience with my big hasn't really been like that - and to be honest I feel a little slighted. I'm super excited that I get a little this spring. She is going to be perfect and I can't wait to spoil her."

What do you do in a sorority?

"The thing people first think of with sororities is parties/mixers. We do that a lot. We have mixers during regular weeks and theres homecoming/greek week mixers (we go to parties every day during the week with a different frat). We also have date parties, formal, crush party, etc. In addition though, we do A LOT of community service projects. Each sorority gets its own organization that it supports. Theta's is CASA. So once a year we hold one big event for our organization. We also participate in everyone else's events. Theta is (possibly) unique in that it has Theta day of service as well so it's a day that theta's from around the country all do some sort of community service. Beyond that there is also sisterhood bonding activities including sisterhood retreats, CAP events (Chapter assessment program) which are things like going to speakers, and chapter every week."

How has being in a sorority changed or impacted your life?

"I don't know that I would say it has "Changed my life" but I think it has helped me grow as a person. I'm surrounded by people who care about me and want me to do better. Being in a sorority has opened up my college experience a great deal. I always have fun events to go to as well as educational events. I have met so many new people and I have a whole network of sisters out there. Its also really shown me what I can do and I feel more myself than I ever have before."

What is your least favorite thing about being in a sorority?

"My least favorite thing is either the politics that go on - which can never be avoided in an organization, or chapter. Chapter is where we all meet once a week to discuss things. Its basically a run down of things we have coming up. But it takes at least an hour each week and we have to dress business casual. Not every sorority has to dress up though."

What is your favorite thing?

"My favorite things is all of the things I have previously mentioned - parties, mixers, sisterhood bonding, etc. etc. But probably my top, number 1 thing is just all the new people I've met. I'm not the usual sorority girl in that I hang out with mainly people outside of greek life, but some of my best friends still are from my sorority. My new roommate for next year is one of my sisters and I honestly feel like had I not joined theta, I would have been missing out on meeting some incredible people who definitely shape the person I am."

Justice Rescue "Heroic UnderDOGS"

 By Lexx Fusco @SimplyEvryThing

“It’s not about the toes we step on. It’s about the paws we protect.” Wow. This quote comes directly from the Justice Rescue homepage on their website www.justice-rescue.com. Justice Rescue is a non profit organization that saves animals from being abused as well as spreads awareness about animal violence and how to make sure every pet has a home. These fine citizens or “dog warriors” speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves—animals.

The dog warriors are Wolf, Crash, House and Kidd. These men are dedicated to their cause. To anyone, they seem like menaces: burly, tattooed, ornery, draped in leather and riding their motorcycles on Sundays—however, appearances are not what they seem. Yes, these gentlemen are not to be trifled with, but they have hearts as powerful as their engines. In their spare time a few years ago, these men would scour “bad areas” searching through abandoned houses—more often than not containing wasps nests, rats, snakes, poison ivy and questionable characters—for animals in need of rescue.

"When you feel there's nothing left in the world, with nothing left to be here for, having a dog can save your life," says Wolf, who speaks for Justice Rescue. "Dogs are really why we're still here." (Nark 2012)

Redneck Couture, all dog owners and lovers, contribute to this amazing cause and organization. Institutions such as these could not exist without the saints (like Crash and Wolf) but also without the funding and support from the communities they are trying to help. We are a proud sponsor of Justice Rescue. Justice Rescue saves these animals from cruel, neglectful homes and provides them with a foster system and care that these creatures desperately need. Please check out their website to donate, volunteer, learn more or adopt!
